Reviving Retro Media: The Resurgence of Cassette Tapes and CDs
In recent years, we have witnessed a remarkable revival of retro physical media, with cassette tape sales reaching a 20-year high, and the vinyl market enjoying 17 years of continuous growth. Surprisingly, CDs are also regaining popularity, particularly among Gen Z, eager to embrace the nostalgia of physical formats. As demand grows, tech companies have risen to the occasion, providing new hardware to play these vintage formats.
Emergence of Modern Players
Leading the charge are companies such as We Are Rewind and Fiio, who offer updated designs for cassette and CD players. These new gadgets boast modern functionalities like USB-C charging and Bluetooth connectivity, catering to the tech-savvy consumer. However, despite these upgrades, many of these players seem to fall short in innovation compared to their vintage predecessors.
A Look Back at Design Evolution
For instance, We Are Rewind’s Bluetooth cassette player bears a striking resemblance to Sony's first-ever Walkman, launched back in 1979. Over the years, cassette players evolved dramatically; by the early 2000s, they had become compact, efficient machines almost the same size as the cassettes they played. Similarly, Fiio’s DM-13 Bluetooth CD player reminds us of the bulky Sony Discman from the late 1980s, while we were once accustomed to slim, portable designs from the likes of iRiver, Panasonic, and Sony by the year 2001.
What Happened to Compact Designs?
This raises an interesting question: Why have modern cassette and CD players reverted to larger sizes instead of embracing the compact designs that characterized early 2000s tech? To unravel this mystery, I sat down with representatives from We Are Rewind and Fiio for The Verge's YouTube channel. Together, we explored the reasons behind the design choices of these manufacturers and the challenges they face in replicating the innovation of former decades.
