Uber Partners with Waymo for Public Robotaxi Launch in Austin
Uber is gearing up for an exciting development in autonomous vehicle technology as it prepares for Waymo’s upcoming public robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. This partnership allows customers to join a waitlist signaling their interest in experiencing rides in Waymo’s self-driving vehicles, anticipated to launch soon.
Current Status of Waymo's Service
At present, Waymo’s driverless taxis are not available to the general public in Austin. Only a select group of users who have signed up on Waymo’s waitlist are permitted to test the service. Waymo has not disclosed the specific timeline for when the ride-hailing service will be opened to a wider audience, but recent announcements hint that it may be imminent.
Exclusive Availability on Uber's App
When officially launched, Waymo's vehicles will be integrated exclusively within the Uber app in Austin. This initiative follows a partnership that was established between the two companies in 2023, starting from an initial pilot program conducted in Phoenix. Austin will be the first city to host the full-fledged service, with Atlanta poised to follow suit.
Joining the Interest List on the Uber App
To prepare for the launch, Uber invites users in Austin to join an interest list for Waymo’s autonomous vehicles. Users can easily opt-in via the 'Preferences' section of the Uber app settings. By expressing interest, customers will receive updates about the launch and will increase their chances of being matched with a driverless vehicle when the service begins.
Operating Areas and Pricing
The co-branded Waymo vehicles will operate in a designated 37-square-mile area of Austin, including neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Montopolis, and downtown. When paired with a Waymo vehicle, Uber customers will enjoy fares comparable to standard Uber services such as UberX, Uber Green, and Uber Comfort. Pricing will vary based on factors like traffic and time of day. Users will be informed of the fares upfront before confirming their rides, which can be initiated directly through the Uber app.
Shared Management of Fleet
Uber and Waymo will collaboratively manage the fleet of autonomous vehicles. Uber will engage contractors for tasks like vehicle cleaning and maintenance, whereas Waymo will oversee roadside assistance and customer service support. Revenue sharing agreements between the two companies remain undisclosed.
Waymo’s Success in Other Cities
Waymo also operates its own ridehailing service, Waymo One, in cities like San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Recently, it achieved a significant milestone by providing approximately 150,000 rides each week across these locations. Studies suggest that Waymo’s service retains customers more effectively compared to traditional human-driven ridehail services such as Uber and Lyft.
