Rivian EV featuring Apple Music interface with spatial audio support

Rivian Integrates Apple Music with Spatial Audio in New Software Update

Rivian's Push for Subscription Connectivity: A New Era in EV Technology

As electric vehicles (EVs) continue to evolve, Rivian stands out for its unique approach to in-car connectivity by forgoing traditional phone mirroring features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Instead, the company is focusing on enhancing its own infotainment system through a significant software update that introduces native Apple Music streaming capabilities.

The Strategic Shift to Native Apps

Rivian's CEO, RJ Scaringe, recently discussed the rationale behind not integrating CarPlay, stating it limits automakers' control over the user experience. By providing a controlled environment with paid subscription services, Rivian aims to enrich the overall connectivity experience with features tailored to its vehicles. This control enables the company to provide apps such as native Apple Music that leverage the ground-breaking technology within EVs, including support for spatial audio and Dolby Atmos.

Understanding the Connect Plus Subscription

A crucial part of this new experience includes the Connect Plus data subscription introduced back in June. Currently, this feature is essential for owners of Gen 2 vehicles to enjoy a range of streaming capabilities and stay connected while on the move. According to Rivian spokesperson, Courtney Richardson, Connect Plus provides the “native app experiences like Apple Music and streaming connectivity” vital for contemporary EV drivers.

Comparing the User Experience: Gen 1 and Gen 2

What sets Gen 1 and Gen 2 owners apart? While Gen 1 owners can enjoy certain streaming apps like Spotify without additional costs, it appears that all future functionality will necessitate a subscription for Gen 1 owners. Moreover, Rivian is in the process of phasing out the older Rivian Membership data services. Moving forward, every owner of the R1T and R1S will require the Connect Plus subscription, priced at $14.99 monthly or $149.99 annually, to stream their favorite media applications or use the vehicle as a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Trial Offers to Ease Transition

In a bid to ease this transition, Rivian is offering a two-month free trial of the Connect Plus service to all existing Rivian vehicle owners. This allows Apple Music subscribers to enjoy the service without incurring immediate costs while practicing in-car data streaming.

The Broader Context of Subscription-Based Connectivity

Rivian's approach isn't an isolated case in the automotive industry; companies like Tesla have also shifted towards subscription models for connectivity, having previously included unlimited data. This change aligns with industry trends that are moving away from free services to models that include ongoing costs for enhanced connectivity features.

Alternative Options for Rivian Owners

For those hesitant to subscribe, RivianTrackr reports that users can still connect to native media apps via a separate Wi-Fi hotspot. Alternatively, mounting a smartphone and utilizing Bluetooth can offer a more conventional audio experience.

The Future of In-Car Connectivity

The growing trend of subscription-based access to connectivity features marks a significant shift in the automotive landscape. OEMs such as Rivian are paving new paths that encourage users to engage with their vehicles in innovative ways while simultaneously managing expectations around costs. With the improved features and a concerted focus on subscriptions, Rivian is aiming to set a precedent that prioritizes a seamless audio experience inside the modern EV.
