Oshkosh Unveils Electric Garbage Robots and Firefighters at CES 2023

Oshkosh's Groundbreaking Plans for Electric Vehicles

The well-established company, Oshkosh, celebrated its debut at CES in Las Vegas, where it unveiled plans for innovative commercial electric vehicles. These vehicles encompass a range of applications, including plug-in fire engines and advanced garbage trucks, integrated with AI technology for enhanced safety and convenience.

Expanding Electric Vehicle Lineup

Oshkosh, known for its credibility as a defense contractor, is already working with the United States Postal Service on the all-electric postal truck initiative. Despite earlier reports of delays, with only 93 trucks delivered as of November, the company is committed to increasing production to deliver a total of 165,000 vehicles, aiming for as much as 70% of these to be electric.

Neighborhood Electric Vehicles: McNeilus Volterra ZFL

Among the highlighted vehicles is the McNeilus Volterra ZFL, an all-electric front-loader garbage truck equipped with an AI-powered detection system. This innovative vehicle locates refuse bins using advanced sensors, ensuring accurate positioning for the robotic arm to collect the trash efficiently.

Transforming Trash Collection with HARR-E

Oshkosh introduced HARR-E, an autonomous electric refuse collection robot that enables convenient trash pickup through a smartphone app or virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa. This technology allows residents to schedule trash collection with ease, comparable to requesting a ride-share service from home.

Enhanced Safety for Emergency Services

For emergency situations, Oshkosh unveiled the Collision Avoidance Mitigation System (CAMS). This revolutionary system employs an advanced camera and radar sensors, powered by AI, to detect nearby vehicles' speed and trajectory, subsequently warning emergency workers of potential collisions up to three seconds in advance.

Overcoming Political Challenges Ahead

While Oshkosh demonstrates optimism regarding the future of electric vehicles, political factors might influence progress, especially with discussions surrounding EV incentives. Nevertheless, executives have expressed positive feedback on their existing USPS electric trucks, with CEO John Pfeifer highlighting favorable reviews and enthusiasm among postal carriers.
