Hyundai Recalls Over 145,000 Ioniq and Genesis Vehicles: What You Need to Know
Hyundai is taking precautionary measures by recalling more than 145,000 of its Ioniq and Genesis vehicles due to a 12-volt battery charging problem. This issue could lead to the loss of drive power and significantly increase the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Understanding the Problem: Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU)
The central issue behind this recall is the vehicles' Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU). This component is susceptible to damage stemming from an internal electrical fault, which can result in a failure that prompts a series of driver warnings. Upon failure of the ICCU, affected vehicles may activate a "fail-safe" mode, slowly reducing drive power over a span of 20 to 40 minutes.
Models Affected by the Recall
The recall affects several models, including:
- 2022-2024 Ioniq 5
- 2023-2025 Ioniq 6
- 2023-2025 Genesis GV60
- 2023-2025 Genesis GV70 (Electrified)
- 2023-2024 Genesis G80
What Hyundai is Doing for Affected Vehicle Owners
Hyundai has instructed vehicle owners to take their affected cars to authorized dealerships. Here, the dealerships will replace the ICCU alongside its associated fuse, and implement new software meant to prevent overvoltage scenarios that could compromise the ICCU in the future. Notably, Hyundai also reported that as of November 2nd, improved ICCU software has been integrated into production runs of these vehicles.
Notification and Reimbursement Process
Owners of affected vehicles will receive notifications via mail starting in January. Hyundai has committed to providing reimbursement for any out-of-pocket expenses that arise from this recall process.
The Bigger Picture: Hyundai's History with Recalls
This isn't the first time Hyundai has faced significant recalls for its electric vehicle lineup. In 2021, the company recalled over 80,000 Kona EVs due to fire risks linked to defects in LG batteries, following reports of numerous battery fire incidents.
Similar Recalls in the EV Industry
Hyundai’s situation echoes similar recalls seen in the broader electric vehicle market. Other automakers, including Porsche with the Taycan, Lucid Air, Ford with the Mustang Mach-E, and the now-defunct Fisker Ocean, have also dealt with safety issues related to power loss.
Preventive Measures Moving Forward
As the electric vehicle market continues to expand, safety remains a top priority for manufacturers. Continued vigilance and swift corrective measures will be essential in maintaining consumer trust and ensuring the reliability of these modern vehicles.
