Google Resolves Chrome Text Highlighting Issue in Latest Update

Google Chrome Update Fixes Text Highlighting Issue

The latest version of Chrome (Version 131.0.6778.86) has successfully resolved an issue that prevented users from highlighting text on certain websites, confirmed Google’s Scott Westover in a communication with The Verge.

What Was the Issue?

The problem emerged with the previous Chrome 131 update and was linked to how Tailwind CSS, a popular CSS framework, managed text selection styling. Although users could still select text, they received no visual feedback indicating that the text had been highlighted.

Testing the Update

After the fix, we conducted our own tests and confirmed that text highlighting now works correctly on several websites, including Bloomberg, The Verge, and the X platform's post composer. This was observed on both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Applicable Browsers

It remains uncertain whether this fix extends to other browsers based on Chromium, such as Arc, which continues to show issues in our testing.

How to Get the Update

Westover mentioned that the update has been rolled out to all users. To ensure you have the latest version and to see the changes, you need to restart your Chrome browser. If text highlighting issues persist after the restart, check the version number in the app’s “About” menu.

Conclusion

This update from Google is a step towards a smoother user experience, reinstating the ability to highlight text visually, which is crucial for many web users.
