Ford Launches All-Electric Puma Gen-E in Europe
Ford is intensifying its efforts to diversify its electric vehicle (EV) lineup in Europe with the introduction of the new all-electric Puma Gen-E. This follows the success of the Puma nameplate, which has been the automaker's best-selling vehicle in Europe since overtaking the Fiesta in sales in 2021.
Specifications and Performance
The Puma Gen-E is designed as a sporty subcompact crossover, displaying an aesthetic similar to the Mustang Mach-E. Key performance metrics include:
- Range: 376 km (233 miles) on a full charge
- Fast Charging: 10% to 80% in just 23 minutes with a 100kW DC fast charger
- Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 8 seconds
Innovative Storage Solutions
Storage capacity is a standout feature for the Puma Gen-E. Assistance is given by the innovative GigaBox, an additional storage compartment under the trunk floor that allows for 145 liters (5 cubic feet) of extra space. This design surpasses the gas-powered Puma's modest trunk storage of 2.8 cubic feet.
Dimensions and Design Enhancements
The subcompact dimensions are as follows:
- Length: 4214 mm (165.9 inches)
- Width: 1930 mm (75.9 inches)
- Height: 1555 mm (61.2 inches)
Ford has reimagined the Puma's aesthetic by implementing a new front design inspired by the Mustang Mach-E. The vehicle also features unique alloy wheels available in two sizes: 17 inches for the standard model, and 18 inches for the Premium version.
Technology and Features
Inside, drivers will find a modern and user-friendly cabin, with a 12.8-inch center display running on Ford's Sync 4 operating system. This system supports wireless connections for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Production and Availability
The Puma Gen-E is set for production at Ford's assembly plant in Craiova, Romania, with electric drive units manufactured in Halewood, UK. Orders for this exciting new model are now open, with deliveries expected to start in spring 2025. However, pricing details have not yet been disclosed.
The Future of Ford’s EV Strategy
Ford's launch of the Puma Gen-E comes on the heels of significant changes within the company, including layoffs impacting 14 percent of its workforce and the idling of the Cologne plant that produces the electric Explorer and Capri. With the Puma Gen-E, Ford aims to regain traction in the European market.
