Exploring the Interactive Artistry of CAMP: A New Exhibit at MoMA
Since its inception in 2007, the Mumbai-based collaborative studio CAMP has creatively examined the ways we interact with and record our world through various mediums, including film, video, and digital archives. The studio has garnered significant recognition not just for its thought-provoking projects but also for its innovative approaches, such as running a rooftop cinema in Mumbai and maintaining one of the largest digital archives of Indian films.
Current Exhibition Details
Currently, CAMP’s first major exhibition in a US museum is showcased at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, running until July 20th. This exhibition features three intriguing video projects that span two decades of their artistic endeavors. These films offer an interactive portrayal of neighborhoods using repurposed television sets, capture cellphone footage shared by sailors traversing the Indian Ocean, and reimagine the use of CCTV cameras for exploration rather than merely surveillance.
From Gulf to Gulf to Gulf: A Portrait of Sailors
One standout project, entitled From Gulf to Gulf to Gulf, presents a compelling portrait of sailors who navigate the Indian Ocean. The project relies heavily on cellphone videos recorded by these sailors, documenting their journeys and daily lives. Founders Shaina Anand and Ashok Sukumaran share how this relationship with sailors evolved, stemming from their curiosity during a visit to Sharjah, UAE, in 2009.
The Role of Ephemeral Footage
Anand and Sukumaran emphasize the significance of ephemeral footage in their works. These cellphone videos, often low in resolution but rich in narrative, serve a dual purpose: they document ordinary experiences at sea while challenging conventional views of what is considered "poor quality" film. The duo posits that such footage can be deeply revealing of cultural and socio-political contexts.
Sharing Through Connection
Sharing these videos among sailors was a physical and intimate process, often involving Bluetooth technology to exchange clips. This method of sharing underscores the communal aspect of storytelling at sea, where sailors connect through personal experiences and music.
Archiving the Unseen
CAMP's commitment to maintaining open digital archives is a hallmark of their philosophy. The establishment of Pad.ma has enabled the preservation of footage that is often discarded or remains unseen in traditional film projects. Instead of valorizing piracy, the duo argues for the importance of accessibility to archival materials for educational and political ends.
Participatory Filmmaking and the Power of Community
Participatory filmmaking is central to CAMP’s ethos, where the subjects themselves play active roles in creating narratives. In their project Khirkeeyaan, CAMP transforms CCTV cameras into interactive portals, allowing communities to connect in novel ways.
Reflection on Surveillance and Behavior
Interestingly, surveillance technology is not merely viewed as a tool of control but rather as a means of exploration. In the video Bombay Tilts Down, CAMP utilizes CCTV to reflect the city itself, engaging viewers to reconsider their interactions with public spaces.
Engaging with CAMP’s Vision
The exhibit at MoMA is not just an opportunity to explore CAMP's artistic output but also a chance to engage with critical dialogues about culture, technology, and the fluidity of the image in our contemporary lives. As these filmmakers challenge viewers to reconsider definitions of piracy, quality, and participation, it reaffirms the essential role of collaborative storytelling in the arts.
