Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has recently unveiled the Lingyuan, a cutting-edge vehicle-mounted drone launching system developed in collaboration with DJI. This innovative system, which adds a new level of functionality to BYD's lineup of electric vehicles, is currently available only in China at a price of 16,000 yuan (approximately $2,197).
The Integration of Drones into Vehicles
During a recent launch event held in Shenzhen, BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu highlighted the comprehensive collaboration with DJI in creating a fully integrated drone launching system. The video demonstration shows a user-friendly interface where a driver can activate the drone launch with just a tap on the vehicle's touchscreen.
How the Lingyuan System Works
As the doors of the vehicle slide open, a drone, possibly a DJI Air 3S, is revealed on a rising landing platform. Notably, the drone can take off and land at speeds of up to 25 km/h and can autonomously return when within a 2 km radius of the vehicle. Furthermore, the drone is capable of following the vehicle at speeds reaching 54 km/h.

The Lingyuan system brings to mind DJI's Dock 3, designed for drone launches in specific operational scenarios, such as emergency response or infrastructure inspection. However, the Dock 3 has a significantly higher starting price of $21,059, which does not include installation.
