Anduril Takes Over Army's HoloLens Contract

Palmer Luckey's Anduril Industries is set to take over the Army's Microsoft HoloLens (IVAS) headset contract. In a recent joint press release, the partnership agreement was announced, which requires approval from the Department of Defense. This transition will allow Anduril to manage the production and future development of hardware and software for the HoloLens, while also setting Microsoft Azure as the preferred hyperscale cloud for all related workloads associated with the IVAS and Anduril AI technologies.

Microsoft's Journey with HoloLens

Microsoft has been adapting the HoloLens for the US Army since 2017 and successfully secured a massive $21.9 billion contract. However, the journey has not been without its challenges, including dealing with various comfort issues associated with the device. With Anduril now stepping in, this may signal the end of Microsoft's direct involvement in HoloLens as it has already phased out other business operations related to the headset back in October.

What This Means for the Future

This new development could have significant implications for the future of augmented reality in military applications. As Anduril assumes control, the focus will likely shift to integrating advanced AI technologies, backed by Microsoft's robust cloud computing resources.
