St Johnstone Manager Craig Levein Aims for Top Six Finish in Scottish Premiership
St Johnstone's manager, Craig Levein, has set his sights on finishing in the top six of the Scottish Premiership this season, shifting his focus from merely avoiding relegation to aiming for a more competitive position in the league. The team narrowly evaded relegation last year, clinching safety by goal difference after a challenging campaign that saw them at the bottom of the table for substantial periods.
Revamping the Squad
This summer, Levein has made significant changes to the squad, bringing in ten new players to McDiarmid Park. This overhaul aims to boost the team’s performance and create a more cohesive unit. In an interview with Sky Sports, he emphasized the importance of the pre-season and League Cup matches in integrating the new signings.
Building Team Chemistry
"We've been trying to get those guys to gel together and to understand each other," Levein explained. "It's not easy; it does take time to get to know what your teammates are good at. I feel we've definitely brought more energy and I’m hoping that we gel quickly, allowing us to get off to a good start.”
First Game of the Season
St Johnstone’s new Premiership campaign kicks off on August 5 with a home match against Aberdeen, broadcast live on Sky Sports. Levein is eager for the team to make an impressive debut in their league matches.
Improvement Across the Board
"We have to be better all over the field, simple as that," he stated. The former Scotland manager acknowledged the difficulties faced last season and expressed a desire to avoid the pressure of relegation battles.
Targeting a Successful Season
"I don’t want to be down there, worrying about what’s behind us and about people catching us. I’d rather be looking up and seeing if we can have a successful campaign aimed at breaking into the top six,” Levein added.
